Me and my new BFF, Dr. Oliver Sacks

Okay, maybe only in my mind!

I did send him a pack of crazy Obama buttons, and he did receive them and will be wearing them on Inauguration Day.

His assistant mentioned that she had been trying to find "Carolina for Obama" bumper stickers, so I told her that I would keep looking here after they returned to NYC. I never found the bumper stickers but I found some GREAT buttons.

In addition to several different "Carolina for Obama" buttons I also sent:
"Scientists for Obama"
"Cryptozoologists for Obama"
"Large Hadron Colliders for Obama"
"Banjos for Obama"

His latest book is Musicophilia, and he has a rather quirky sense of humour so I thought he would enjoy them!

Yes, I think this is probably the most unusual item I have ever sent a celebrity. And I'm okay with that.

Hey Lois...you dropped all of the blogs you followed! Is everything okay?

Hi Eric,
I did manage to "find" the blogs I had been following, they just aren't listed where I expected.

My family is healthy, and my class is going fine, but the year actually got off to a TERRIBLE start.

*This next section is totally depressing, so don't read it until you are prepared. Or not at all!*

My best friend's husband was diagnosed with cancer just after New Year's. He was perfectly healthy, but got a routine x-ray after pulling a muscle in his abdomen. They found tumors, lots of them. They removed his spleen and one kidney and started him on chemo, but he may not last another week, because his liver is failing.
I have never heard of a cancer that can kill a healthy person SO quickly, and he is only 32. They are deliriously happy and have been married only five years.

She doesn't really want me to visit, and his entire family is flying in from England, but her niece said I should probably wait and fly out for the funeral. SHIT. That is NOT what I wanted to hear, but she was just being honest.

And talk about bad timing - my Spring Break is THIS week, but he probably won't die until NEXT week.

This is ALL just so TOTALLY fucked up that I can hardly process it.

Thanks for reading, if you got this far....

I'm so sorry to hear about all that you are going through. My prayers are with you, your best friend, and her husband. Please let me know what's going on.

Take care of yourself, and know that I've been through the agony of having someone important to me fight and lose a battle with cancer. Twice. So I know what you are feeling right now.

Really?

I've just never heard of someone going from HEALTHY to their DEATH BED in 8 weeks. And he was doing better just LAST WEEK - he was at home and eating and drinking and enjoying the "buzz" from the Marinol his doc prescribed.

The docs knew from the beginning that it was BAD, but no one imagined it could take him so quickly.

He is only 32 and his wife (my best friend) is 47 and had never been married before. They are blissfully happy together - still totally, ga-ga, giggly, happy, like newlyweds.

That is the real SHIT of it. She finally found the perfect partner, and now he is DYING.

didn't mean to go on so long, sorry.
Thanks SO MUCH for reading...

Lois
